Yes- Eldredge and National are the same, The original company name was 'Eldredge' and they merged with June and I believe one other, and the new company formed was named 'National' however, they kept using the name 'Eldredge' along with about 600 other names. National is one of the companies that would 'badge' their machines with just about any name the buyer wanted. However Eldredge is a National company name, not a 'badge' for a reseller. The earliest were made before the merge, and are badged Eldredge, however Natioanl used the name at later dates, so having one with the Eldredge name does not indicate it's older. Mine is Eldredge and was bought new in the 30's (I have the original documentation).

The first use a different style of can, it's got 'wings' on it. I acquired one like that, but it does not fit my machine. The later two styles don't have those wings and are very similar, and I believe are interchangeable. I went and looked - the most 'recent' patent date on mine is 1913 - and I know it was bought brand new in the 30's. So I guess they just kept using the older design. This is what throws many people off on dating machines, expecially Willcox and Gibbs because they always put the patent dates on the machine, and at the last, the patent was about 50 years old. The patent dates on mine are 8/8/11 10/31/11 11/28/11 9/16/13 If your machine is missing the 9/16/13 date, then it's probably safe to assume it was made before that date - otherwise you'll have to go by something else to date it.
This site has quite a bit of info The first picture shows three machines of different ages - but they all look very similar on the outside. One thing to keep in mind, the very oldest will be Eldredge, however the very youngest can also be Eldredge (as mine is). Some tidbits - this sight says all the machines have the same patent dates, early ones have a HXXXX serial number, mine is H61241. So if yours has a HXXXXX (five digit) number, it's not going to be from 1913, and if it's got a H5XXXX or later, it's one of the last made, in the 30's I have a can for the oldest style, so I'm looking for a machine that it goes with.
The most notable difference is that the slide plate does not 'slide' but has a pivot point instead. So that's not too hard to look for in pictures. I inherited an Eldredge Two Spool in excellent condition with serial number H9045. It is unique in that it is in a beautiful wooden case and has a swing around Hamilton Beach motor drive.
It has some extras and it all works except it is missing the spool can (the older version). I was researching the history of the two spool when I came across this site.
Would you be willing to sell your spool can or would you be interested purchasing the sewing machine? I will try to attach some pictures.
Hello everyone, I recently got some sewing things from my Grandmother and in them was a suitcase with a large black metal sewing machine in it with the name 'National' across the body in gold lettering. There's no book, but the machine itself is in excellent condition. The only information I can find online about it is a vintage newspaper ad from the 1950's that has a picture of the machine in it.
Has anyone heard of this brand? Were they industrial machines? Is it something I can use or should I put it away as a keepsake because it may be worth something? I do a lot of heavy sewing, multiple layers of thick fabric and I'd hate to ruin it. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Medusa and BillyB-Here I am and glad to help in any way I can. I have about 50 National sewing machines and am considered an expert on them. Billy-The Reversew name refers to a couple of National models that had reverse capabilities.
Can you post a picture of it? If I can see it, I can tell you more about it, where to find the serial number and maybe give you an estimate of age. Actually, the same goes for Medusa's machine. A picture is worth a thousand words as the saying goes!
Oh, and it's not an industrial, but I've used my 1920s Damascus Grand (National Rotary) to make a canvas boat cover, so they can take a beating! I have been given a Seamstress A electric sewing machine and the motor has National sewing machine co - Model A.

It is very dirty and I'm trying to clean it up. I cannot find any information regarding this particular machine. It has a spring on the motor rather than a belt. There is a number of 3348203 under the bobbin cover/plate.
It has a shuttle rather than a bobbin. Can anyone provide me any assistance? I have visited but didn't find my particular machine. I have attached a picture but the bobbin winder, motor, etc. Already removed.
Antique Sewing Machine Resource - Eldredge/National Machines HISTORY OF THE COMPANY Also a manufacturer of automobiles in the early 1900s, the National Sewing Machine Company was formed by the consolidation of two Illinois based manufacturers: the Eldredge and June companies. The Eldredge Sewing Machine Company was originally located in Chicago, Ill, and manufactured machines from 1869 through 1890. Also located in Illinois, the June Manufacturing Company manufactured sewing machines from 1881 through 1890. The National Sewing Machine Company was formed in 1890 from their consolidation. Machines in the company’s product line included both original designs and models copied from other manufacturers. However, unlike Singer or W&W, National only manufactured domestic use models.

In 1924, the National sewing machine company bought all rights belonging to the Davis S.M. Most National sewing machines were “stenciled models’ manufactured for department stores, mail order companies, and retailers. By the mid-1920s, the majority of National-made sewing machines were sold in this way. Like the other American sewing machine manufacturers, the National company suffered heavy losses with the introduction of European and Japanese sewing machines to the US market after the Second World War. National merged with The Free and the New Home companies in 1953.
